This remarkable sculpture of a seated Buddha epitomizes the refined artistry of Sri Lankan Buddhist traditions.
The Buddha is depicted in dhyana mudra (meditation gesture), seated cross-legged in a pose of serene contemplation on a double-lotus pedestal.
The sculpture features smooth, polished surfaces and finely rendered details, particularly the draped monastic robe cascading over the left shoulder.
The face is beautifully modeled with downcast eyes, a gentle smile, and arched eyebrows radiating tranquility. A prominent ushnisha (cranial protuberance) in the form of a gilded flame crowns the head, symbolizing enlightenment and spiritual energy. The finely textured hair and elongated earlobes reflect traditional Sri Lankan craftsmanship and iconography.
The patina, rich with age, enhances the sculpture's aesthetic appeal and historic value.
Excellent for its age, with a smooth surface and a rich dark patina. Minimal wear is visible, with gilded highlights on the ushnisha still intact and vibrant.
This sculpture reflects the influence of the Polonnaruwa and Kandyan periods of Sri Lankan art, where Buddha figures were characterized by elegant simplicity, meditative expression, and harmonious proportions. Such sculptures were often enshrined in temples or kept for personal veneration, representing the Buddha’s teachings and path to enlightenment.
On a custom wooden plinth for display, combining historic authenticity with modern presentation.
