WOOD GAU WITH YAMA TIBET OR MONGOLIA 19TH CENTURY

Dimensions: Height 19 cm Wide 16 cm Depth 8 cm

Weight: 540,1 grams

A finely crafted and highly detailed portable shrine (Gau) from 18th-century Mongolia, featuring an intricate depiction of Yama, the Lord of Death.

The shrine showcases Yama in his wrathful form, standing on a buffalo mount with a prone human figure beneath, symbolizing the subjugation of ignorance and death.

He is adorned with a skull crown, holding symbolic implements—a bone club and lasso—exemplifying his role as a protector in Vajrayana Buddhist tradition.

The Gau is encased in a wooden frame with glass, preserving the vibrant polychrome details against a red textile background.
